Myrrh, Sandalwood and Frankincense - Top Three Essential Oils for Skin Rejuvenation

5:05 AM Posted by Jo Pedranti

The top three essential oils  for skin  rejuvenation in Young Living's skin care products are myrrh, sandalwood and frankincense. Their skin -restoring properties are legendary and clinically proven. You can buy the individual oils and create your own skin care products as well.

Sandalwood - Soothes, firms and softens skin. It protects from infection and is useful for acne, scars and wrinkles.

Frankincense - Rejuvenates aging skin by improving skin tone and returning dry and oily skin to normal, balanced state. It firms skin, promotes healing and fights inflammation.

Myrrh - Maintains firm, youthful skin by helping to prevent tissue degeneration. It cools, soothes, and heals, especially useful for chapped, cracked and infected skin.

The wonderful thing about essential oils is that they can be used for more than just skin care. This justifies the higher purchase price since they have so many other uses. A bottle lasts a long time since less is better when it comes to essential oils. A few drops go a long way.

Other benefits of the above oils:

Frankincense - It produces a feeling of calm and slows down breathing. It has been used for respiratory catarrhal discharge and respiratory congestion. It may be helpful for  asthma sufferers according to Battaglia. As an astringent it may relieve heavy periods, and it generally acts as tonic to the uterus.

Myrrh - Is an excellent expectorant and valuable in bronchitis, coughs, colds and other conditions involving excess thick mucus. It is believed to be a useful remedy for diarrhea, flatulence and poor appetite. It is an uterine stimulant and promotes menstruation, and may be useful in relieving painful periods.

Sandalwood - Has a calming and harmonizing effect and is useful in relieving tension. According to Battaglia, it is an ideal remedy to use for nervous depression, stress, fear and a hectic daily lifestyle. As Battaglia also says, "it has a profound action  on the mucus membranes of the genito-urinary and the pulmonary tracts and is often used for chronic infections of these areas."

You don't have to purchase expensive skin care products. I haven't bought any fancy skin care products in years. I purchase the essential oils and make my own blends instead. As I mentioned earlier, the oils have many uses, and this way I can use them for several things instead.

Here are some tips on how to pick the right oils and how to make  a quick facial oil.

Rejuvenation: Frankincense, sandalwood, cedarwood, geranium, lavender, myrrh, rosemary

Wrinkles: Fennel, lemon, myrrh, frankincense, clary sage

Normal or balanced skin: Clary sage, geranium, lavender, ylang-ylang, rosewood

Dry skin: Clary sage, cedarwood, sandalwood, rose

Oily skin: Lavender, lemon, geranium, basil, frankincense, rosemary

Sensitive skin: Roman Chamomile, rosewood,

Inflamed skin: Helichrysum, clary sage, lavender, myrrh, patchouli

Acne: Tea tree, eucalyptus, frankincense, juniper, lavender

Broken capillaries: Rose, ylang-ylang.

Mix the essential oils that are best for your skin with a base oil for a quick nourishing custom-blended facial treatment. Select one or two oils (or more) from the list above that are suited to your skin condition.

Dry skin example:
Sandalwood 10 drops
Geranium 20 drops

OR

Frankincense 5 drops
Myrrh 5 drops
Rosewood 20 drops

Add two table spoons of cold pressed vegetable oil  such as sweet almond, jojoba, or apricot kernel to a cobalt or brown glass bottle. Add the essential oils to the bottle, put the lid on and shake to mix. You can also mix several different massage oils as well. Dot on the skin and massage lightly until the skin has absorbed the oil and use  as a night time skin treatment for example. Not sure what base oil is best for your skin condition? Check out my post about massage oils for more information.

Or use the above oils and make a high antioxidant oxygenating facial gel.

You can also add essential oils to un-scented lotion, aloe vera, or make your own facial toner.

Before you leave:

I recommend that you always perform a skin patch test when you try a new oil.

Check out my safety page to make sure you are aware of any contrindications before you use essential oils. Some oils are not suitable when suffering from certain conditions.
